The Research Team at Whitireia & WelTec invite you to join this week's Friday Lunchtime Research Seminar
Welcome folks,
Our weekly lunchtime conversations and presentations about research are an open forum for all staff who would like to join us online. Each week we invite a presenter or two to share their research knowledge or interests, and you are welcome to contribute to the korero, ask questions, share your own ideas, and/or just get to meet the other folk in our research community in this informal setting.
Friday Lunchtime Seminar: Using photovoice to explore digital solidarity and offline action among 2030 women in Korea | Dr Jiyea Park (Seoul National University)
This week we have a treat for you! Dr Jiyea Park is joining us from Seoul National University in Korea and will be presenting ‘Applying photovoice to explore digital solidarity and offline action among 2030 women in Korea’.
Recently, kaimahi from Whitireia & WelTec who attended the ICQI Conference (online) heard this presentation and believed it was so good, that everyone at Whitireia & WelTec needed to hear it! The presentation centres on young women's (20-30 years or 2030) online and offline protests during the impeachment of the Korean president in December 2024.
This presentation will be of particular interest to kaimahi interested in visual research methods, politics, 4th wave feminism, gender, activism, social media, online counterculture, and how ‘light sticks’ can be used as a signifier of protest.
Abstract
This study applies photovoice to examine how 2030 women in South Korea actively engaged in digital solidarity and transitioned to offline participation during the impeachment protests in the Winter of 2024. In the virtual world, 2030s women gathered on social networking services (like X, Instagram, and Theqoo) and online community platforms, and something sparked them to go outside the virtual space, the real world. The researcher aims to uncover the dynamics of digital activism and collective mobilization through protest participants by generating photographs and narratives and emphasizing how such digital platforms fostered strong connection, motivation, and action. The anticipated key findings include the symbolic importance of digital spaces, the emotional and social aspects of solidarity, and the pathways from online engagement to offline protest. This visualized approach advances the understanding of gendered political participation and demonstrates the value of visual methodologies in exploring modern social movements.
