NZRAB accreditation for Master of Architecture

Otago Polytechnic | Te Kura Matatini ki Otago is proud to become the fifth school of architecture in New Zealand to gain accreditation from the New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB).

Having an accredited qualification is a requirement for the primary pathway to registration as a registered architect in Aotearoa New Zealand.

It means Otago Polytechnic is the only tertiary provider in the South Island to offer a professionally accredited Master of Architecture (Professional) programme, helping expand equitable access to architectural education and strengthening the profession through a diversity of regional voices.

Head of Architecture, Associate Professor Tobias Danielmeier, says the Otago programme represents a bold southern contribution to architectural education, being tectonically focused, place-relevant, as well as culturally grounded.

“Rooted in Ōtepoti Dunedin, the school is a champion of place-relevant architecture. We are committed to equipping graduates with not just design capabilities, but with the tools, knowledge, and ethical grounding to shape meaningful futures.”

“We believe that the future of architecture lies in reimagining how buildings are made,” he says.

“While many programmes focus on image or theory, we bring structure, assembly, and material agency back to the centre.”

“Advances in tectonics are not just technical—they are transformative. I believe this is a conversation missing in much of the New Zealand education landscape.”

The two-year Master’s programme places strong emphasis on Mātauranga Māori, environmental responsibility, and industry-engaged learning.

Students benefit from direct involvement with communities, mana whenua, councils, and practising architects, ensuring that graduates are well prepared for practice.

Associate Professor Danielmeier says the accreditation by NZRAB is a significant milestone for the School of Architecture, and one he believes “celebrates the efforts of students (akonga), staff (kaimahi) and collaborators who have shaped this future-focused, values-led, and materially astute degree.”

The NZ Registered Architects Board has congratulated the school on their achievement and says it looks forward to hearing more about the architecture programme’s strengths and future potential.
