A new programme is being rolled out in Dunedin to help you identify places you can go when you are in distress.

safe space

Look out for this logo in the windows of businesses and venues around Dunedin. It indicates that the premises are safe and welcoming environments for people experiencing distress or requiring assistance.

The staff at these participating locations have recieved guidance on how to respond to people needing support, with an emphasis on discretion and referral to further help where needed.

Safe Spaces are a way for you to remove yourself from a situation if you are feeling uncomfortable or unsafe, and know that the people within are able to provide you with support on what to do next.

It can be handy to keep an eye out for places with the Safe Spaces logo so you know where you can go.

For police, fire and ambulance:

  • In an emergency (it's happening now or there is danger), call 111

  • In a non-emergency (reporting something that has already happened, no immediate danger), call 105
